1. Do Your Research Ahead of Time

Before grabbing your car keys and heading out the door, it’s probably a good idea to sit down and do a bit of online research. This is especially true for anyone new to the world of cannabis.

THC is a powerful compound, so the more you understand it before loading up at the dispensary, the better your experience is likely to be.

You’ll need to know the difference between indica and sativa, how to know if their weed is fresh, high quality or old and nasty. Keep in mind that not all weed is created equal.

Just like any other organic product, there’s good stuff and bad stuff. The key is to arm yourself with a basic knowledge of cannabis so that you’ll know what you’re looking at.

2. Know the Local Laws

You also need to know the local marijuana laws in your area. While some states now permit the purchase and use of medical marijuana, most have yet to legalize recreational marijuana use.

Take the time to look up your local laws online. Each state should provide plenty of information on their government websites.

It’s extremely important to understand what the law allows, as well as what it doesn’t, so you don’t end up getting in trouble by purchasing and using marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes.

3. Know Your Budget

Here’s another thing to keep in mind before your first time at a dispensary: It’s easy to spend a lot of money.

Yes, there are limits to the amount of weed you can buy on a daily basis, but there are still plenty of other ways to blow through your dough.

For example, most medical marijuana dispensaries sell a wide variety of weed paraphernalia.

This can include raw papers, bongs to T-shirts. So unless you don’t mind going broke on your first visit, a smart shopper will limit the amount of cash you bring along.

4. Bring Your ID and Valid Medical Marijuana Card

Don’t forget your valid government ID and medical marijuana card as you won’t be able to purchase weed without them. This should be a no brainer.

After all, you’ve hopefully remembered your wallet and your money, so your ID and weed card should be kept snuggly inside there as well.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask the budtenders

A dispensary is a cool place to visit. There’s a ton of stuff to check out as you walk around.

And now that you’ve done a bit of research, you’ll probably have a million questions to ask.

Well, this is the place to do it. Most budtenders love weed. They live for the stuff. And as much as they love smoking it, they also totally dig talking about it.

You’ll be extremely curious about all the different strains, the cool names. Everything will smell wonderful, so don’t feel stupid asking about anything you don’t understand.

Remember, budtenders are there to help. They want to help you find exactly the right products that’ll provide the most experience.

6. Remember: Budtenders Aren’t Doctors

Yes, budtenders love weed, and they probably know a lot about it, but that doesn’t make them doctors.

So they can’t offer medical advice, or even offer opinions on what type of weed products would be best for your medical needs.

Most budtenders will be able to provide a wealth of information about their products. Just understand that there are limits to the type of guidance they can offer.

7. Set goals: What Kind of Experience Do You Want to Have?

Your goal is to get high, right? Right. So the next question is the type of high you’re looking for.

As suggested earlier, do a little research so that you can understand the differences between indica and sativa.

Talk to your doctor also about your medical needs if your goal is to buy weed for your medical condition.

Take note also that some types of cannabis might not be a good combination with your current medicines.

Once you have this information, you’ll be able to have a conversation with a budtender at the local dispensary about the products that’ll provide the desired experience.

Again, every strain of weed is different. Some will get you mellow, some will relax you, some will get you high and some will put you to sleep.

Remember that there are some strains that when consumed to much will leave you feeling paranoid and you don’t want that.

That’s why you need to know the type of high you’re after so that you’ll be able to find the best product to match your needs.

8. Be courteous to other buyers: Avoid Dispensary Faux Pas

Don’t be a jerk. Dispensaries are laidback places, so don’t be annoying.

There will be other customers, but don’t be hanging out asking what they’re buying. Be cool, make your purchase, and get out.

9. Experiment and buy at least 3 different strains

Once you’ve made your first medicinal cannabis purchase and had the chance to get high, feel free to start experimenting.

You’ve entered a whole new world, filled with amazing potential and a ton of strains to experience. A great idea would be to record everything in a cannabis journal.
