What is a Medical Marijuana Card?

medical marijuana card

Getting a medical marijuana card is like having a golden ticket to finally gain a certain kind of relief after all the failed medications of traditional, laboratory-processed drugs.

This is not to say though that marijuana doesn’t have side effects or may not have undesired symptoms. There are illnesses that traditional medicines can’t really deliver. Most medicines would only delay the onset of much-maligned conditions.

Knowing the benefits that marijuana can bring to people seeking medical relief, it would be more fitting to legalize marijuana for medical purpose and, to a better extent, recreational purpose.

But we can’t have our dreams more realizable in just a snap. So, to possibly make things brighter in the grand scheme of things for patients whose ailments need the miracle cure from cannabis, this is where the medical marijuana card comes in.

Just so you know, medical marijuana card is an identification card issued by a state or country where medical cannabis is legal. It enables the patients with a certain condition to get a doctor’s recommendation to acquire, possess or even cultivate cannabis for medicinal purpose.

The keyword here is “doctor’s recommendation” instead of doctor’s prescription for a fact that the use of cannabis is still contested for medical purpose in the US federal level. And another factor for that is marijuana still lacks the normal safety and efficacy classification by Food and Drug Administration.

So, how can you get a medical marijuana card?

Medical marijuana card, which is also called as cannabis card or MMID, can have an expiration of 12 months but you have to obtain a licensed physician to provide you with a Doctor’s Rec.

The process may be tricky since you have to get the recommendation if you have certain conditions that would qualify you to get the card.

Conditions such as cancer, AIDS, and multiple sclerosis may help you get a recommendation from the licensed physician for the cannabis card. There are other conditions, aside from the above-mentioned ones, that may qualify to obtain the card.

But the terms in getting the card may vary in state jurisdictions where medical marijuana is legal.

For one, you must ascertain that medical marijuana is legal in the states or country where you reside. In the United States, there are 27 states that have made medical marijuana legal.

These states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

The District of Columbia has also approved the use of medical cannabis but it is still being regulated.

Apparently, regulation of this substance– despite its legal medical use– includes issuing medical marijuana card.

Recently, 8 states have made marijuana legal for medicinal and recreational purposes, but they still have certain prohibitions as for the use, possession and even cultivation.

Spain, Australia, Poland, Italy, and Uruguay are among the countries that marijuana is legal for medicinal use. However, Spain and Uruguay are, perhaps, the few countries, that would enable the consumption of marijuana legal.

But you have to check for the legal clauses of these countries in the use, possession, and cultivation of marijuana.

Things are getting brighter for cannabis advocates though. The gradual yet seemingly positive embrace of many states in the US in making marijuana legal for medical use doesn’t mean though that anybody can go to a dealer and prescribe oneself to ingest the plant-based drug.

It is better to put stupidity aside and gain a certain level of wisdom in using this kind of substance that is still classified as among the notorious for possible abuse. The US at the federal level still considers marijuana as illegal, so it is something to think about if you don’t want to do some jail time.

And just to be wise, especially if you have certain conditions that would require you to consume medical marijuana, get a medical marijuana card.

Now, if you already have a medical marijuana card, maybe you can share to use your experience in acquiring one.
