Jeanine Moss Interview: Creating Luxury Handbags and Accessories for the Cannabis Ladies

Jeanine Moss is the founder of @AnnaBisStyle, a company creating luxury handbags and accessories for the cannabis ladies.

We recently invited Jeanine for a Q&A session to talk about her company, AnnaBis and the products they are offering.

Ganjly: What is your background and what made you decide to pursue a career in cannabis and create AnnaBis?

Jeanine Moss: My background is in communicating. I started early trying to get my parent’s attention, and that blossomed into a full-blown career in branding, marketing and media. I think most branding/marketing people dream of controlling the whole operation from product development through sales – and I’m no exception. That’s why I’m an entrepreneur and that’s why I started AnnaBis. I’ve always been interested in culture change, from women’s issues in the 80’s (big shouldered man suits!) to the economic revival of New York City, to the dawn of computerization, the dot.com boom, and rebuilding after September 11th. Now it’s the cannabis industry – and the best part is that I’ve been a consumer all my life!

Ganjly: How many employees do you have in AnnaBis and what kind of traits do you look for when hiring new members?

Jeanine Moss: I only have two other people who work every day in the company, but I have a whole team of people working on a project basis from creating campaigns to social and production. I’m about to get two MBA interns, and I’m super excited. When I look at resume’s I like to see good communications, an engaged person, and someone who is eager to pitch in on anything anytime. That’s above the qualifications. I definitely like to see people who have had a few jobs so that they understand a bit about company culture and manners. I really love people who are organized and meticulous! They’re my favorites.

Ganjly: What is the most challenging experience you have had in the cannabis industry so far?

Jeanine Moss: I’m still not thrilled with the male/female dynamic a lot of the time. Often I’m at events that are still 80% male. I’m ok with that since over my career that number started at zero, but I’d like to see more women – especially in the investment arena. I also don’t love some of the booths at conventions with the candy-wrapper designs and women dressed to match. Personally, I’ve had difficulties getting male investors to understand the importance of accessories to women. They don’t have a personal connection (and who can blame them?). But luckily, there are some men (and women) who really understand the luxury fashion-accessories business. There are a number of female investors and investment groups in cannabis out there – and I’d like to see them step up and set an example. I’m working to connect with them, because I think a cadre of badass female investors behind AnnaBis would really help us write an amazing story.

Ganjly: What is your proudest moment since you started down this path of being an entrepreneur in the cannabis space?

Jeanine Moss: This will sound funny, but when I was sorting through all the ways to go – I never dreamed there would be as much opportunity out there – and I saw that I was surrounded by the smartest, most successful, busiest people anywhere. And they were all giving AnnaBis and me the benefit of their time, talent and expertise (as advisors, investors and service providers). I realized that with this group of people, there isn’t any hurdle that is too high for AnnaBis to cross. It’s a comfort that is hard to describe.

Ganjly: Do you have plans for new products, services or events and would you be willing to drop any hints about what we can expect from AnnaBis in the future?

Jeanine Moss: AnnaBis will always deliver a high quality, well-designed fashion accessory that does its job supremely well. We always design to satisfy a specific customer (we strive to be like Mercedes and think of every little detail). Our customer is a sophisticated person. Well-informed, globally-minded, takes responsibility for their own life. She (and soon everyone) wants quality –not fast-fashion that she throws away. She wants something that looks great and makes it easy and convenient to share her cannabis – or not. She travels from the boardroom to the baseball diamond, and she wants to be prepared for anything, any time, on her own terms. We’re making even more things that let people carry and store cannabis in style.

Ganjly: What is your advice for hopeful cannabis entrepreneurs who are considering joining the cannabis industry? What are the positives and negatives they should expect?

Jeanine Moss: Just remember that when you work in an industry you love (like cannabis, magazines, movies, etc.), at some point you’ll see behind the velvet curtain and the mystery will be gone. So, I’d say, focus on the functional part of what you do. If you love sales, go where you can do that and make the most money. If you love people, go where you can work with them for the most money (see a pattern yet?). And if you love cannabis, find the functional thing you can do there that will make you the most money! If you just love cannabis, by all means get any job, and enjoy! However, if you love to grow, or you’re a born activist, none of the above applies. Those things are special and (sometimes) it’s not about the money.
