Check out the Q&A below to learn more about Robert and their dispensary, Planet 13.
Ganjly: When did you decide to create Planet 13?
Robert Groesbeck: We made the decision to create the Planet 13 brand shortly after recreational marijuana was approved by Nevada voters in 2016.
Ganjly: For outsiders to Las Vegas’ cannabis industry, what should they know about the space? And how would you describe Planet 13 to them?
Robert Groesbeck: The superstore is unlike anything that exists in the cannabis space anywhere in the world. It is the first facility specifically designed to create a customer “experience” on a grand scale.
The facility will be a true Las Vegas destination. Customers will be exposed to a variety special effects, all new to the cannabis industry and Las Vegas, including laser graffiti, a computerized ariel orb show, LED interactive floor, and 3D mapping in the ceiling, among other effects to be identified.
No other dispensary on the planet has anything close to what customers will see and experience at Planet 13. We intend to “out Vegas-Vegas”.
Ganjly: What has been the biggest challenge or obstacle you’ve had to overcome so far?
Robert Groesbeck: The project is large in scope and scale—phase 1 alone is $40,000 s/ft. With the Las Vegas construction market heating up, it has been a challenge to find skilled workers, material costs continue to escalate, and it has been a full-time job keeping the target completion date in place.
That said, it is the most exciting and rewarding large-scale project that I have ever had the opportunity to be involved with.
Ganjly: And what is the most rewarding experience you’ve had?
Robert Groesbeck: It always brings a smile to my face when I see how our customers react to our existing store in Las Vegas, which is a design jewel in its own right.
I can’t wait until those same customers get the opportunity to not only see, but also experience the superstore.
Ganjly: What do you think the future Las Vegas cannabis industry will look like?
Robert Groesbeck: I am bullish on the future of the cannabis industry in Las Vegas. Millions of visitors to our great city have no idea that cannabis use is legal to those 21 years and older.
As more and more people become aware of legalization, I see great upside potential for the entire industry.
Ganjly: What advice would you offer to somebody who wants to open a dispensary?
Robert Groesbeck: For those looking to get into the dispensary business, I would advise them to do their homework. The tax and banking issues are especially onerous.
The regulatory environment is very challenging, too. Also, it is of critical importance that prospective owners understand just how expensive it can be to participate in the space. The required capital can run into the millions of dollars.
