Their employee-owned company proudly stands by the potential of the product and their mission includes community outreach and assistance programs; earnestly providing 40% discounts to veterans, active military personnel, individuals on long-term disability, and for low-income households.
We had the chance to get to know more about Lazarus Naturals and their Founder, Sequoia Price-Lazarus. Check out the interview below.
What’s your background and what made you decide to get into the hemp & CBD industry?
Sequoia Price-Lazarus: I went to Quest University and studied physics for two years before deciding that university was not the right fit for me. I got into the CBD industry after talking with a friend’s mom who, at the time, was looking for CBD to take while she had cancer. It was then–back in 2015– when I realized how expensive CBD was and how much all of the companies in the marketplace were overcharging. This spurred me to make CBD products which are accessible to anyone regardless of financial circumstance.
What’s the most challenging experience you’ve had in the industry so far?
Sequoia Price-Lazarus: It was hard to stay focused on the big picture and continue to build early on considering we were still having a hard time even making payroll. I started this business without any investment and to this day we are still entirely self-funded. We’ve had a lot of growing pains because of this when times are hard and when we need to plan for future growth.
What’s the proudest moment you’ve had?
Sequoia Price-Lazarus: Every time I talk to one of our customers and they tell me how much of a difference our product has made in their life. That is why we are here and to know that we have made a positive impact on people’s lives is all I could wish for.
What kind of impact do you expect the passage of the Farm Bill to have on your company and the overall hemp/CBD industry?
Sequoia Price-Lazarus: I think it will open up a lot of doors in every way. Companies from retailers to industrial manufacturers, big and small, will start producing and selling CBD. The product will be on the shelves of major grocery stores and manufactured by international companies. The reach and market potential will skyrocket but so will the competition and barriers to entry because of it.
How many employees do you have and what kind of traits do you look for when hiring new members?
Sequoia Price-Lazarus: I look for someone who has a passion and a burning desire to make the world a better place. I want to find people who are in it for the long haul and want to push themselves and everyone around them to be their best and deliver amazing products to our customers. I need people that are not only willing to question the status quo but also me and everyone around them. We need people who are critical thinkers and who have a formidable work ethic. Currently, our staff includes around 60 full-time employees.
What is your advice for hopeful cannabis entrepreneurs who are considering joining the industry? What are the positives and negatives they should expect?
Sequoia Price-Lazarus: The grass is always greener from the outside and while there are a lot of opportunities, it takes a lot of hard work. Because the industry is emerging there are quite a few challenges to find consistent and reliable partners.
