We thought that Colorado was very big in cannabis industry with a reported 1 billion from the revenue generation of marijuana shops in 2016, but California has recently dwarfed that figure with a whooping $23.3 billion from weed crop.
The Golden State was already a major pot-producer and is currently one of the few states where it is legal to use marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. Aside from Washington, Oregon and Colorado, it is legal to cultivate cannabis in California. The recent figure proves that marijuana is making its way as the king of cash crops in America.
According to the Orange County Register, the California’s weed crop beats other 5 crops in revenue by a long shot.
Take a look at this list of the top commodities and their worth in California.
1. Marijuana — $23.3 billion
2. Milk — $6.28 billion
3. Almonds — $5.33 billion
4. Grapes — $4.95 billion
5. Cattle, Calves — $3.39 billion
6. Lettuce — $2.25 billion
You can really see that marijuana brings more cash to the coffers than other important commodities. This also makes marijuana as the most valuable crop in California in 2016.
California is an agricultural state with its mild climate perfect for farming, especially in the rich Central Valley, which is considered the breadbasket of the world.
And though California is famous for its oranges, grapes, vegetables and almonds, the state manages to surprise more people in its production of marijuana. Definitely, marijuana is a huge cash crop.
The $23.3 billion figure for the weed crop is nearly three times bigger than what the research estimated California’s marijuana market would be after its legalization.
With the size of California and its agricultural land, there are plenty of acres to grow marijuana on.
California weed producers are obviously growing billions of dollars worth of the plants on these areas, which should not anymore be a surprise. But think of the economic dollars marijuana could have if it’s legalized in federal level.
In other news, Vermont governor has pardoned 192 cases of minor pot crimes.
Almost 200 people who had minor marijuana cases have been pardoned by Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin. Consequently, their records for convictions were wiped off on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.
Shumlin, who received 450 applications to pardon minor marijuana-related drug cases, had encouraged people convicted of minor crimes prior to marijuana decriminalization of the state for possession of small amounts of the weed in 2013 to apply for the pardons.
“My hope was to help as many individuals as I could overcome that stigma and the very real struggles that too often go along with it. Vermont should follow the many states that are legalizing and regulating the use of marijuana and put to an end the incredible failure that is the War on Drugs.”
Vermont is one of the states with measures for marijuana legalization. It decriminalized marijuana in 2013. It is one of the first states that approved medical marijuana in 2004.
