Danny Davis is the Founder and Managing Partner of @convectium, a one-stop-shop for cannabis retailers’ sourcing, packaging, shipping or domestic/international manufacturing needs.
We recently invited Danny for a Q&A session to talk about his background and his company, Convectium.
Ganjly: What is your background and what made you decide to pursue a career in cannabis?
Danny Davis: I have been an investor and advisor in the tech industry since 2011. I spent 20+ years in IT and automation focused on The Fortune 500. I realized this industry was lacking much of the scale that companies in other sectors rely on, and I felt leveraging my background and expertise to bring innovation and continuity to the cannabis space was an amazing opportunity.
Ganjly: How many employees do you have and what kind of traits do you look for when hiring new members?
Danny Davis: 25. We look for people with a unique energy and passion for learning. Our employees treat our clients like long-term partners; we do not want a typical supplier-buyer transactional relationship. We are all in this together.
Ganjly: What is the most challenging experience you have had in the cannabis industry so far?
Danny Davis: The biggest challenge has been overcoming the lack of design and engineering talent coming out of China that the industry was settling for. We have adjusted our entire business model to rely on our own engineering, complemented by three of our own managed factories. This has greatly improved our product tech, consistency, and overall supply chain.
Ganjly: What is your proudest moment since you started down this path of being an entrepreneur in the cannabis space?
Danny Davis: Growing this company from 2 people to over 25 and walking into dispensaries and grows all over the world and seeing the direct impact Convectium products have had on the industry; each member of our team has influenced much of the equipment and design the cannabis industry uses today.
Ganjly: Do you have plans for new products, services or events and would you be willing to drop any hints about what we can expect from your company in the future?
Danny Davis: Yes, we are excited to announce our newest product, the 710eShark. This revolutionary machine is a huge upgrade to our existing filling system and will automate post-processing workflow for concentrates like nothing ever available before. It is now the most accurate, fastest and cost-effective solution for filling oil into any device you can imagine. Coupled with our new pre-racked, proprietary 710Cove cartridges and 710Captain machine, we can deliver 100 devices filled, capped and racked every 60 seconds.
Ganjly: What is your advice for hopeful cannabis entrepreneurs who are considering joining the cannabis industry? What are the positives and negatives they should expect?
Danny Davis: The good news is that it is a perfect industry to disrupt. There is a lack of automation and standards that can dramatically affect the scale at which the industry will need to be. And while the opportunities seem limitless, any new entrepreneur will need to navigate the rough road of no institutional investment, lack of federal approvals and a daily need to adapt and re-educate. Like any hyper-growth vertical, you can fail just as fast as you can build.
Thank you, Danny, for taking the time out to talk to us!
