In today’s rapidly evolving cannabis technology industry, few leaders have made as lasting an impact as Shauntel Ludwig, Chief Executive Officer of Synergy Innovation. With over a decade of experience, Shauntel has been at the forefront of brand building, product strategy, and global market expansion.
As a founding member of the DaVinci vaporizer brand, she has applied her expertise to shaping consumer brands such as Eyce and DaVinci, ensuring their place at the cutting edge of cannabis consumption technology.
In this interview, we’ll explore her journey as a female entrepreneur, the innovations driving Synergy Innovation’s success, and her vision for the future of cannabis tech.
Ganjly: Can you tell us about your journey as a female entrepreneur in the cannabis industry? What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
Shauntel Ludwig: My journey as a female entrepreneur in the cannabis industry has been both challenging and rewarding. Entering a male-dominated field like cannabis technology required resilience, confidence, and a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve. Starting out, one of my biggest challenges was overcoming preconceived notions about women in leadership roles, especially in an industry as unique and rapidly evolving as cannabis. My journey has shown me that while there are obstacles, there are also tremendous opportunities for women to lead and innovate in the cannabis space.
Ganjly: How has your experience in the U.S. cannabis technology sector influenced your approach to brand building and product strategy at Synergy Innovation?
Shauntel Ludwig: Working in such a dynamic and highly regulated industry has taught me that understanding and addressing consumer needs is the key to creating successful brands. In the cannabis sector, consumers often face special challenges, from navigating complex regulations to finding products that genuinely meet their needs.
This has driven me to focus on developing brands that prioritize consumer satisfaction and genuinely solve problems. At Synergy Innovation, I ensure that our products, like those in the Eyce and DaVinci lines, are designed to solve specific consumer frustrations. Consumer feedback is central to our innovation process. In developing Eyce’s silicone, we’ve prioritized durability and added features such as onboard storage and tools, knowing that our consumers value these features in their smoking accessories. Similarly, with DaVinci vaporizers, the focus has been on delivering first-to-market innovation like our all-zirconia ceramic air paths and on-device dosage control.
Ganjly: The IQC Vaporizer features innovative cooling technology. Can you explain how this technology works, and what sets it apart from other vaporizers on the market?
Shauntel Ludwig: The IQC Vaporizer’s innovative cooling technology is designed to enhance the user experience by delivering a smoother, more enjoyable vapor and it sets the brand apart from the rest. This technology works by incorporating a zirconia ceramic air path and a glass-lined oven that cools the vapor before it reaches the consumer’s mouth.
The oven is strategically positioned at the bottom of the vaporizer, allowing the air path to be elongated, which further cools the vapor as it travels through the device. This cooling process begins as the vapor moves through the zirconia ceramic air path, effectively reducing the temperature while maintaining the vapor’s purity and flavor. Additionally, the IQC’s cooling technology is complemented by precision temperature control, enabling consumers to customize their experience.
Ganjly: What was the inspiration behind creating the IQC Vaporizer, and how do you see it enhancing the user experience compared to other cannabis consumption methods?
Shauntel Ludwig: The IQC was developed as a more affordable alternative to the IQ2, designed to meet the needs of users seeking a high-quality vaporizer without the premium features that drive up cost. When we created the IQ2, we included advanced features like variable speed air dials and on-device dosage control—innovations that significantly enhanced the user experience but also increased production costs, and, consequently, the retail price.
Ganjly: With the increasing focus on health-conscious consumption, how does the IQC Vaporizer address concerns about the potential harshness of inhaling cannabis?
Shauntel Ludwig: With a focus on health-conscious consumption, the IQC Vaporizer and all of DaVinci’s products are accepted by medical users, and recreational users will follow suit. DaVinci takes a clean-first approach, using only premium materials to ensure the best experience without the harshness of cheap metals or plastics.
This means we build products where vapor only touches glass and zirconia, always keeping purity to the consumer in mind. Our device offers precise temperature control within 1 degree, allowing users to tailor their experience for effects and enhanced flavor profiles. As an example, consumers looking for anxiety relief can set the IQC at 356 degrees Fahrenheit to activate the THC to alleviate social anxiety, while going higher will create a more euphoric, psychoactive effect.
With a 10-year warranty, DaVinci ensures customers can dial in exactly what they need, offering a safe and effective solution for health-conscious cannabis consumption.
Ganjly: As a leader in cannabis consumption tech, how do you stay ahead of trends and ensure that your products meet the evolving needs of consumers?
Shauntel Ludwig: Staying ahead of trends and ensuring our products meet the evolving needs of consumers requires a proactive and adaptive approach. This involves a deep commitment to innovation, continuous market research, and close engagement with our customer base.
We prioritize innovation by constantly exploring new technologies and materials that can enhance the user experience. This means not only improving existing products but also developing entirely new solutions that anticipate where the market is heading. For example, our work on cooling technology in devices like the ARTIQ is a direct response to consumer demand for smoother, more enjoyable vapor on oil pens.
Market research is another crucial element. We continuously monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and consumer preferences to stay informed about what’s happening both within the cannabis sector and in adjacent industries.
Engaging with our consumers is equally important. We actively seek feedback through various channels—whether it’s direct customer interactions, surveys, or social media. This feedback informs our design and development process, ensuring that we’re not only meeting but exceeding customer expectations.
Finally, collaboration within the industry and with our partners allows us to share insights and stay connected to the broader cannabis community. This collaborative spirit helps us refine our approach, leverage new ideas, and ensure that our products remain at the forefront of the market.
Ganjly: Global market penetration can be challenging in the cannabis industry due to varying regulations. How does Synergy Innovation navigate these challenges, and what strategies have proven successful?
Shauntel Ludwig: At Synergy Innovation, we navigate these challenges through a combination of strategic planning, regulatory expertise, and adaptability.
One of our primary strategies is thorough research and compliance. Before entering any new market, we invest significant resources into understanding the local regulatory landscape. This includes staying up-to-date with evolving laws, licensing requirements and any restrictions on product categories.
Another key approach is strategic distribution partnerships. These partnerships allow us to leverage their expertise and distribution networks, ensuring smoother and faster market entry while mitigating risks associated with regulatory compliance. We’re also known for consistently delivering high-quality, compliant products, so we’ve been able to build trust with consumers and regulators alike – this has also facilitated our entry into new markets.
Adaptability is also critical. We design our products and marketing strategies with flexibility in mind, allowing us to quickly adjust to new regulations or market demands.
Ganjly: What do you see as the future of cannabis consumption technology, and how is Synergy Innovation preparing for upcoming trends and consumer demands?
Shauntel Ludwig: The pace of innovation in cannabis consumption technology is unprecedented. The days of choosing between smoking a joint or eating an edible are long behind us. Today, consumers have access to a diverse array of consumption methods, from patches and vaporizers to electronic dabs and more.
This diversification has significantly influenced our strategy. We’re mapping out a comprehensive roadmap that will not only broaden our customer base but also ensure that we meet the ever-growing demand for convenience and reliability.
As we expand our offerings, our focus remains unwavering: delivering premium-tier vaporization and smoking products from flowers to concentrates. Our commitment to quality and innovation will continue to drive us as we navigate this rapidly changing landscape.
Ganjly: How does the IQC Vaporizer enhance the flavor profile of cannabis, and what feedback have you received from users about their experience with this feature?
Shauntel Ludwig: Users have consistently shared how impressed they are with the clean and robust flavors they experience with the IQC. They often mention that DaVinci’s precision temperature control is a game-changer, enabling them to explore different temperature settings to find the sweet spot for their preferred taste and effect. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many users noting that the IQC delivers one of the most flavorful and enjoyable vaping experiences they’ve ever had.
Ganjly: Can you share any upcoming innovations or projects that Synergy Innovation is working on, particularly in the realm of cannabis consumption tech?
Shauntel Ludwig: We’re always looking ahead to the next big thing in cannabis consumption technology. We have some exciting projects in the pipeline, particularly around enhancing user experience through even more precise control and customization. One area we’re focusing on is further refining our temperature control technology, allowing for even more nuanced adjustments to suit individual preferences.
We’re also exploring new materials and designs that could revolutionize how people consume cannabis. Our goal is to create products that not only meet but exceed expectations in terms of functionality, durability, and aesthetics. While I can’t share all the details just yet, I can say that we’re committed to staying at the forefront of innovation in this space. This ensures that our customers have access to the most advanced and user-friendly devices on the market. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements soon!
