Using CBD Oil to Treat Hypothyroidism: My Story

Like many who struggle with hypothyroidism, I had no idea what was going on at first.

When I was pregnant with my third child, Stella, I began experiencing symptoms, including physical and mental fatigue, depression, and an inability to sleep.

I chalked it up to my pregnancy hormones.

After all, lots of pregnant mothers experience these symptoms, so I didn’t think too much of it.

The pregnancy ended up being healthy and we had Stella (who is now three), but it was my toughest pregnancy by a long shot and I was ready to get back to feeling like myself again.

But, to my surprise, things didn’t get any better.

In fact, my symptoms increased the weeks and months following giving birth and I was emotionally and physically exhausted nearly every moment of every day.

Add to that the typical struggles of having a new baby in the home and my health continued downhill.

In the first year, Stella would only sleep an hour or two at a time throughout the night, so I wasn’t getting much sleep and struggled to keep myself healthy.

I still had no idea what was really going on and thought much of it was probably related to my sleep deprivation.

It wasn’t until Stella’s first birthday that I looked in the mirror and had a huge realization that I didn’t look like myself anymore.

Something was deeply wrong.

With my first two children, I felt normal again six months after giving birth, but this time was different.

Stella was sleeping better and for longer periods of time, but I was still struggling with insomnia, depression, and complete exhaustion.

I knew I needed help.

My Diagnosis

After I realized that things weren’t going to fix themselves and after trying a lot of different holistic approaches, I went to the doctor and said that I was suffering from postpartum depression, which seemed like the most reasonable explanation at the time.

As often happens in these cases, I was put on antidepressants.

After some blood work, the doctor noticed that my thyroid levels weren’t normal, but thought it was because of the depression and lack of sleep.

In retrospect, I should have looked more into that at the time, but I was at my wit’s end. I cried sitting in the doctor’s office, desperate for anything to make me feel better.

So I started taking the antidepressants.

I wasn’t crazy about the idea of being on antidepressants, but if they made me feel better, I was willing to keep taking them.

For a while, they did just that, and I started to improve.

After about a year of taking them every day, the symptoms started to return.

Once again, I was completely exhausted most of the time, I couldn’t sleep, and I struggled with depression on nearly a daily basis.

Being someone who tries to take a natural, holistic approach to health problems, I decided I would up my game with eating even healthier and working out more to get back to a good place.

But, yet again, things didn’t get better – they kept getting worse. I had no sex drive, I couldn’t sleep through the night, my workouts completely drained me, and I was miserable.

Eventually, I was diagnosed with both hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s. I was put on NP thyroid to help with my low thyroid function.

It helped a bit, but I was still nowhere near my old self and continued to look for solutions.

Finding CBD Oil

In April of this year, I heard about CBD oil from my Mom and how it could help manage many of the symptoms I was struggling with.

Once again, I was willing to try just about anything, so I decided to give it a shot.

At first, it didn’t really help. With the original brand I tried, I didn’t notice much difference.

But, after doing some research, I learned that the CBD industry is pretty much the wild west, with little to no regulation, along with lots of get-rich-quick companies who produce bad products and even mislabel them.

A couple of months later, I found a much better, full-spectrum product that I wanted to try.

Full-spectrum means that the oil contains more than just CBD (cannabidiol), but many of the other naturally occurring compounds in hemp, including other phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Research has shown that when all of these compounds work together – which is called the entourage effect – you end up with much more effective oils than when taking just CBD, which is known as CBD isolate.

It was also reassuring that the product was completely free of THC.

Hemp plants only have trace amounts of THC, but I only wanted the CBD and related compounds and wasn’t looking to experience the psychoactive effects of THC.

Believe it or not, many CBD products that claim to be THC-free have been shown through lab tests not to be so, but I felt really good about this brand and their purification process.

And you know what?

It started to work.

I felt more peaceful, I was less stressed out and not nearly as irritable.

Other thyroid symptoms started to go away as well, including the hair loss and the overall imbalance of my hormones.

I started to feel normal again like I hadn’t truly felt since before my pregnancy with Stella.

After three years of struggling with this, could CBD really be the answer?

Excited by the progress, I started taking CBD three times a day, hoping it would continue to help with my autoimmune issues and my thyroid problems, and I continued to feel better and more like myself.

At this point, it’s been a couple of months, and it’s truly been an amazing experience so far.

Of course, it’s not a substitute for eating well, working out, and generally living a healthy lifestyle.

Those things are still really important to me and a regular part of my life.

I’m also still taking my thyroid medication, though I think that CBD oil is potentially going to serve as a complete replacement for all medications I’ve been taking for my thyroid problems.

After learning more about CBD, it makes a lot of sense that it would help.

Scientists have found that there are cannabinoid receptors (part of our bodies’ endocannabinoid system) located on our thyroids, which, as you know, are meant to help balance our hormone activity.

When the thyroid starts to improperly regulate these hormones, it can lead to a lot of the symptoms I was experiencing, which is exactly what taking CBD oil addresses.

I will be honest with you. I still have tough days sometimes, physically and emotionally, but I can feel myself coming back around, and it’s all thanks to CBD. I am so grateful!

I’m not sure what the future holds, but I do know I would not be able to do what I do today without CBD, including running my business, taking care of my kids, and being a good spouse.

CBD has given me the ability to feel normal again and I truly believe that it’s going to be a gamechanger in thyroid treatment.
