We recently interviewed Shauntel Ludwig, Vice President of Operations of DaVinci. Read the full interview below:

Ganjly: What is your background and what made you decide to pursue a career in cannabis? What inspired the company to create Da Vinci?

Shauntel Ludwig: Cannabis has always been a part of my life, and I’m glad that I get to share the passion with the world.  It’s great when things like that happen. What’s the saying, “Do what you love and it won’t be work”?

We started out launching a brand into the electronic cigarette market about 8 years ago and failed miserably for a lot of reasons, but mostly because no one was passionate about getting behind the nicotine push. Cannabis education was rare back then, but we started to hear chatter about cannabinoids and how temperature affects the boiling points- and hence effects. Once we saw the first portable vaporizers and learned how to manipulate heat, we knew we could immediately design and build something better. Those things still drive us today.

Ganjly: How many employees does Da Vinci have and what kind of traits do you look for when hiring new members?

Shauntel Ludwig: Currently, we have 15 stellar team members at DaVinci and we do everything in-house from product development to shipping. When hiring, we seek passion, drive and cultural fit. We spend a lot of time together, so we strive to find like-minded individuals. Skill sets are important too, but they can always be learned and fine-tuned.

Ganjly: What is the most challenging experience you have had in the cannabis industry so far?

Shauntel Ludwig: There are going to be daily challenges in any industry and this one is no different. I’d say the most challenging thing is marketing this product. We have always been limited by what we can safely put out there, while still trying to convey a story and impart education where there has historically been none. In addition to that, advertising placement is still limited. Where one publication opens its doors, three more close theirs. It’s a constant battle, even with legalization as it is.

Ganjly: What is your proudest moment since you started down this path of being an entrepreneur in the cannabis space?

Shauntel Ludwig: There was a defining moment for me about 6 years ago. I was up in Canada and met this family who had their daughter with them who had been diagnosed with MS. They were explaining how cannabis was really the only thing that was working for her symptoms and they trusted DaVinci to be the vessel that administered that to her. When you get to really see the results of the products you put into the world, it just changes things.

Ganjly: Do you have plans for new products, services or events and would you be willing to drop any hints about what we can expect from Da Vinci in the future?

Shauntel Ludwig: At DaVinci, we’re always working on something new. Product development is our core competency, and it’s what we’d rather spend the day doing. We do have something brewing for the immediate future, and I can also tell you that our goal is to have a product in every vertical by the end of the year. Stay tuned!

Ganjly: What is your advice for hopeful cannabis entrepreneurs who are considering joining the cannabis industry? What are the positives and negatives they should expect?

Shauntel Ludwig: Don’t give up and follow your dreams. You will be inundated with the “impossibles”,  but with enough determination, there is no such thing. This industry can be difficult to navigate, but I can honestly say that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with some of the most sincere and thoughtful people. That’s just not something that you can say about any other industry.
