In recent years, the term “vaping” has entered the modern vernacular. While often touted as an alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, vaping pens have become quite popular in the intervening years.
If you’ve been thinking about using one, having a clear understanding of how they work and what they can do before is pretty important. Buying a new vape pen can be equally fun and challenging. Whether you’ve used them for some time or have questions about them, knowledge is power when it comes to vape pens and e-cigarettes. Here’s a short guide to vape pens to help you get a feel for these interesting little devices. Check it out below.
Vape Pens At A Glance
A vape pen is a battery-powered device that heats a cartridge filled with an oil of your choice. They’re incredibly portable and can be used anywhere. They’re a popular choice for folks who want to use cannabis in public, medicate during the day, or use recreationally. Pens are often refillable, rechargeable, and reusable. There are many types of vape pens on the market today and the popularity of vape pens and e-cigarettes is growing considerably right now. Pens can be disposable, reusable, rechargeable, or even used for dry herbs depending on the design.
How They Work
Vape pens are marvels of modern engineering. The engineering of a vaping device is pretty interesting when you stop and think about it. Ostensibly a pen or other device, these pens create a type of aerosol byproduct (vapor, essentially) by heating a liquid inside a cartridge. The liquids typically have different flavoring. They also supply nicotine (for e-cigarettes) through the mouthpiece.
Pens usually have a coil, wick, mouthpiece, chamber for containing the liquid, and an atomizer (similar to what you’d find in an airbrush), along with airflow control mechanisms. Learning about how vape pens work can provide crucial insight into purchasing one for yourself and help you understand them much better.
Ingredients
Now that you have a thorough understanding of how these pens work, it’s a good idea to understand the ingredients used in vaping liquids. Since vaping is still a relatively new thing, there aren’t a lot of studies out there about Ingredients, but it’s still a good idea to know what’s in your e-liquid, especially when judging it for safety.
The ingredients you’ll find in e-liquid are comprehensive. Seriously, there are a lot of unique ingredients that go into your typical liquid. To kick things off, most liquids are going to contain nicotine, glycerin, various flavorings, and propylene glycol (this is derived from vegetable oil in most cases). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the following ingredients can also be found in most e-liquid:
- Diacetyl
- Acetyl propionyl
- Acetoin
- Benzaldehyde
- Vanillin
- Caramel flavors
Ingredients can vary greatly, so be very meticulous when assessing labels and do your research to understand exactly what’s in your vape juice or e-liquid before buying. It should also go without saying that you should only purchase from reputable vendors and sources. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it should provide a good start for assessing the ingredients in your vaping liquids.
Buying A Vape Pen
In the world of vape pens and e-cigarettes, there are a staggering number of options. It can be fun and engaging to shop for them. There are so many brands and flavors, too, that it can sometimes make it hard to truly decide. So which is the best vape pen or e-cigarette for you? Only you can answer that question.
First off, you should be fully aware of the effects of the vaping liquid you choose. Research and asking questions is your best friend in this regard. Think about what you want from your pen before you make a purchase.
Also, keep your budget in mind. Budgeting is important, but you also need to ensure that the materials are going to be of high quality so that the pen holds up for some time. Stainless steel and carbon fiber construction offer more durable pens. In the heating element, better conductive materials like ceramic and strong glass will make for a better-constructed pen.
Look at battery life and how it heats the liquid. Find out if the pen uses induction heating, convection, or conduction for heating the liquid. When you decide to shop for one be sure to check out its temperature control, battery life, and construction quality.
The last thing you want is a poorly constructed/designed vape pen. That could be dangerous! Being deliberate and meticulous in your search for a vape pen will lead to a more positive experience and ultimately help you get the one that works best for you.
Safety Precautions
It can’t be stressed enough that people should use a vape pen or e-cigarette responsibly. With that in mind, there are some safety precautions to take when using a vapor pen. Drinking plenty of water is a must.
Staying hydrated is beneficial for preventing some side effects like headaches or dry mouth. It’s also incredibly important to only use the vape pen as intended. The last thing you want is a broken pen or a fire from a damaged battery.
Other common-sense approaches like only purchasing from repeatable vendors and storing your liquid/pen appropriately should also be considered. Ultimately, safety should always be your priority whenever considering the use of vape pens or e-cigarettes.
