What is a Medical Marijuana Card?

Getting a medical marijuana card is like having a golden ticket to finally gaining access to cannabis.

This is not to say though that cannabis doesn’t have side effects. There are a lot of benefits that cannabis can bring to people seeking alternative medical relief. it would be more fitting to legalize marijuana for medical purposes and, to a better extent, recreational purpose.

Just so you know, a medical marijuana card is an identification card issued by a state or country where medical cannabis is legal. It enables patients with a certain condition to get a doctor’s recommendation to acquire, possess, or even cultivate cannabis for medicinal purposes.

The keyword here is “doctor’s recommendation” instead of doctor’s prescription for a fact that the use of cannabis is still illegal for medical purposes at the US federal level. And another factor for that is that cannabis still lacks the normal safety and efficacy classification by the Food and Drug Administration or FDA.

How can you get a medical marijuana card?

Medical marijuana card, which is also called a cannabis card or MMID, can have an expiration of 12 months. You have to get a licensed physician to provide you with a Doctor’s Recommendation. In Florida, you can get a medical marijuana card from marijuana doctors.

The process isn’t easy since you have to get the recommendation if you have certain conditions that would qualify you to get the card.

Conditions such as cancer, AIDS, and multiple sclerosis may help you get a recommendation from the licensed physician for the cannabis card. There are other conditions, aside from the above-mentioned ones, that may qualify you to obtain the card.

But the terms in getting the card may vary in state jurisdictions where medical marijuana is legal. For one, you must check that medical marijuana is legal in the states or country where you reside. In the United States, there are states that have legalized medical marijuana.

These states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

The District of Columbia has also approved the use of medical cannabis but it is still being regulated. Apparently, regulation of this substance, despite its legal medical use, includes issuing medical marijuana cards.

Spain, Australia, Poland, Italy, and Uruguay are among the other countries that marijuana is legal for medicinal use. However, Spain and Uruguay are, perhaps, the few countries, that would enable the consumption of cannabis legally. But again, you have to check for the legal clauses of these countries in the use, possession, and cultivation of pot.

Things are getting brighter for cannabis advocates though as more states are pushing for legalization. The US at the federal level still considers marijuana as illegal, so it is something to think about if you don’t want to do some jail time.

If you have certain conditions that would require you to consume medical marijuana, get a medical marijuana card now. And, if you already have a medical marijuana card, maybe you can share with us your experience in acquiring one.
